3 day road Trip

Took a ride down to Ashville NC, took 25e from richmond only passed 3 other motorcycles the entire way. Got up the next day and killed the Blue Ridge Parkway down to Cherokee there was no traffic it was like a 80 mile road race we had the Parkway to ourselves. It was one of the best days I have spent on a bike. But like a douchebag I forgot my Camera so no pics.

Busy Week in the Garage

Its been a busy week in the garage working on the motorcycle and the VW bus so I have not been able to post anything up in awhile. So here it is I got my front end mocked up on the VW and everything fits perfect thanks to Aaron at widefive.net so now I am going to start sanding and painting the inner fenders and mount it permanently so check back. The motorcycle I was able to get my wheels painted the tires put on and all new bearings and seals installed. I also got some time to wrap my headers and put the wheels on the bike. I will now post some pics so no more rambling. -Sam-

We are pulling the motor on the New Yorker next week and hopefully can rebuild it in time for spring so keep checking back for its progress

This is the before Pic, I was running an El cheapo trailer fender that was mounted crooked

This is the Front Street Cycle fender it is rolled out of 13 gauge steel and is of the highest quality.I emailed Craig told him my tire size and he hooked me up with a fender that fits perfectly.

This is a nice part handmade in the USA at a reasonable price,not some shit imported from Taiwan by some west coast Bro who puts a sticker on it and calls it cool.

I would recommend Front Street for any of Their parts the guy also makes some killer handlebars as you will see later on Cassanova's bike build. BUY AMERICAN JohnDale

On this day in 2007 we lost one of the greats, Kirk Runstrom was an acoustic powerhouse with an original style of Guitar playing that may never be matched, He was also a prolific songwriter giving a voice to the common folk everywhere.

Kirk and his bands, Split Lip Rayfield, ScroatBelly, and Grain and Demise changed the way I listen to music and I will always be grateful to him for opening this door.

In a play on his near iconic presence in the World of Chopperdom, Maddog has decided to go racing once again. Be it a passion for speed, a drive to restore ST status, or simply a mid-life crisis, the Shadetrees welcome this long anticipated turn. The race is on, so to speak, and Herniator 4 is beginning to take shape. The original 120" monster Merch motor is back in it's rightful garage and awaiting a seat in which to plant itself. The new bike will be made from scratch and the basic plan is starting to materialize. An agreement was made from the parties involved that the effort on this go-round will be to make a bike that will go as fast down the track as possible. To the likely dismay of many, gone will be the hand-shift and rough-and-tumble images of the original Herniator. The new bike will feature a custom made, lightweight chrome-moly frame, aluminum tank and fender, diminutive front end and a 5" slick in the rear. The look will be all '70's drag bike with a 14" extended wheelbase, and a low, narrow profile. It will, of course, be unmistakably Shadetree in the details. The idea is to get the power to the asphalt and be a competitive entry wherever it goes. It will be an amalgamous effort by many of the Shadetree bubbas, each offering fabrication, paint, art, pit crew time, icing the beer, sharing in the victories of a successful trip down the strip or whatever else is needed. The debut is set for the AHDRA drags at Bristol in August, but with some luck it may be able to run at the Smokeout in Rockingham in late June. Of course we hope to have the bugs worked out and running good by the fall AHDRA meet at the Rock.

The bike is more than just a bike. It will have an air shifter. But it will also have a hand shifter adaptable to it. That plan is in the works whether Dog realizes it or not. The seating position will certainly not be street friendly and the ground clearance will be minimal. It will be a purpose built bike but not just for racing. Read on.....

Maddog may not realize the importance of the job at hand at this time. The Shadetrees may be at a turning point with our return to the track. This is how it all started back in the mid-nineties with a bunch of jarheads checking out the quick bikes and making the annual trip to the Shadetree mecca. Pointing our front tires due southeast (for the Kentucky crew anyway) we make the trip with excitement befitting little girls. We plan our vacations around it; our families attend it with us sometimes, but it is always known that this is something that drives us. It makes us look at the month of October like most people look at the first month of spring. This mere race bike may bring a sense of renewal to all of us. And I for one, am really looking forward to the comraderie, the smell of the pits, the rush of the tree lights descending down to launch, and the sight of Maddog once again wowing the crowds and entertaining us all.....not to mention seeing him squeezing back into those leathers!

V-TWIN DEALER SHOW 2011

Well it was time to head up to Cincinnati for the dealer show last weekend. Saturday morning we loaded up in the limo with two cases of beer and dream. We rolled into Newport KY on the levee to the Travelodge only to find out they have no limo parking in fact the lady told me she had never seen a Cadillac that long at this fine establishment. Well you can understand how we felt as we double parked the limo on the side and swallowed down our last beer before going in. Once we made it into the show it was time to hang out with friends we hadn’t seen for a while and see the kool new products they had been working on it their shops. Oh yeah we all about scoring some swag as well.

After the show we passed on the Biltwell party and headed to the Southgate House in Newport to get our own party started with Coralee and the Townies playing it was one hell of a good time. I closed the show and the weekend by thanking everyone for coming out to party with us. What a great weekend it was!!!

A large group of good friends rent this building have it sectioned off into mini stalls for each to build hotrods and choppers. Every winter they through a party to cover some of the expenses the shop incurs over the year. As it is a private party we called up Milwaukee Mike to get ok to get thru the door and he said come on up. We had been told it was the holy grail of winter parties, so we went in search of a good time. The tells had not been exaggerated, maybe just toned down a bit.

We took a trip over to the interior shop this week and picked up the seats for my bus. Jamie did an amazing job on them he completely stripped the seat, sanded and painted the frames, then made the foam for them, and stitched me up the seat covers. Now its time to make up some interior panel templates so he can start working on them. The plan is to drive this bus as much as possible including long hauls, sitting in traffic, the rain, and maybe snow. While deciding on what is going to make it go fast and be reliable the question came up: How are you going to stop it? The decision was made to use a set of disc brakes from http://www.sacoperformance.com/ They are a 4 piston billet aluminum calipers with billet aluminum wide 5 hubs and drilled rotors plus mounting brackets, wheel bearings and seals. They are great and easy to deal with plus the customer service is top notch check them out. -Sam-

Stopped by Tony's shop to check on my motor for the VW bus he had the block and heads cut for the 94mm cylinders he also line bored the block. Just waiting on some bearings and we will start putting it back together. So now I am off to the shop to start sanding my engine tins so the can get painted. Started working on the front suspension for the 66 VW bus. The front beam and spindles were all done by Aaron at Widefive.net he did an amazing job on building me a narrowed beam and flipping my spindles if you are looking for any type of VW bus suspension he is the guy to check out. I will post up some more pictures of the disc brake setup i am running next week. -Sam-

61 VW Beetle Another Gone But Not Forgoten

This was the car that got me hooked on VW's. Drove it down the coast of California from Santa Maria to LA what a great drive that was it was a perfect day with sunshine and very few clouds with a nice cool coastal breeze I got to stop by the beach a few times and relax and take in the Pacific Ocean. I then cut over to Phoenix it was cool to come over and see all the wind farms out there and all the open space and the night sky and then down to Tucson AZ. That VW never let me down even in the middle of summer in traffic or when it was cold always started and took me where I needed to go and kept running. Just wanted to say thanks for the fun times and for making me see the light. -Sam-

We were in need of a vehicle we could all fit in ,I looked at some vans then I found this mid-80's jewel ,all power ,all luxury. It is currently my daily driver 55,000 original miles .It has already been immortalized in song by Eric Smith and ran 48 mph in 1/8 mile while hauling 11 poeple and a dog.

The 1966 VW Bus

Here is my 1966 VW Bus that we have been working on for the last 6 months. We stripped all the paint down to bare metal, then used an etching primer to seal the metal then primed it in green and white. Here are a few pictures of what it looked like the first day I got it and, after a bit of hard work, where it is now. Keep an eye out for future progress updates on suspension and brake modifications, and especially the motor build and paint scheme.
